The New Captain Comeback

Posted: November 9, 2014 in Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford is making quite a name for himself this season by leading his team to three consecutive fourth quarter comebacks. The latest comeback came earlier today against the Miami Dolphins, when Stafford threw an eleven yard touchdown pass to Theo Riddick with 29 seconds left to give the Lions a 20 to 16 victory. The Detroit quarterback’s fourth quarter prowess is due to one aspect: he’s spreading the ball around to all of his receivers. Stafford used to get into trouble by locking into his number one target, Calvin Johnson, and that caused him to throw a lot of interceptions when the Lions needed to either protect a lead or make a comeback. He is doing an excellent job of reading defenses quickly and methodically moving the team down the field, instead of going for the homerun ball like he used to. This change in his performance can be attributed to one man: the head coach, Jim Caldwell.
